Microwave-induced nonequilibrium temperature in a suspended carbon nanotube

Antenna-coupled suspended single carbon nanotubes exposed to 108 GHz microwave radiation are shown to be selectively heated with respect to their metal contacts. This leads to an increase in the conductance as well as to the development of a power-dependent DC voltage. The increased conductance stems from the temperature dependence of tunneling into a one-dimensional electron system. The DC voltage is interpreted as a thermovoltage, due to the increased temperature of the electron liquid compared to the equilibrium temperature in the leads

A Modular, Real-Time Fieldbus Architecture for Mobile Robotic Platforms

    Get PDF
Cataloged from PDF version of article. The design and construction of complex and reconfigurable embedded systems such as small autonomous mobile robots is a challenging task that involves the selection, interfacing, and programming of a large number of sensors and actuators. Facilitating this tedious process requires modularity and extensibility both in hardware and software components. In this paper, we introduce the universal robot bus (URB), a real-time fieldbus architecture that facilitates rapid integration of heterogeneous sensor and actuator nodes to a central processing unit (CPU) while providing a software abstraction that eliminates complications arising from the lack of hardware homogeneity. Motivated by our primary application area of mobile robotics, URB is designed to be very lightweight and efficient, with real-time support for Recommended Standard (RS) 232 or universal serial bus connections to a central computer and inter-integrated circuit (I(2)C), controller area network, or RS485 bus connections to embedded nodes. It supports automatic synchronization of data acquisition across multiple nodes, provides high data bandwidth at low deterministic latencies, and includes flexible libraries for modular software development both for local nodes and the CPU. This paper describes the design of the URB architecture, provides a careful experimental characterization of its performance, and demonstrates its utility in the context of its deployment in a legged robot platform

Biofabrication of Gelatin Tissue Scaffolds with Uniform Pore Size via Microbubble Assembly

    Get PDF
The control of pore size and uniform porosity remains as an important challenge in gelatin scaffolds. The precise control in building blocks of tissue scaffolds without any additional porogen is possible with costly equipment and techniques, though some pre‐requirements for polymeric material, such as photo‐polymerizability or sintering ability, may be needed prior to construction. Herein, a method for the fabrication of gelatin scaffolds with homogenous porosity using simple T‐junction microfluidics is described. The size of the microbubbles is precisely controlled with 5% deviation from the average. Porous gelatin scaffolds are obtained by building‐up the monodispersed microbubbles in dilute cross‐linker solutions. The effect of cross‐linker density on pore diameter is also investigated. After cross‐linking, pore size of the resultant five scaffold groups are precisely controlled as 135 ± 11, 193 ± 11, 216 ± 9, 231 ± 5, and 250 ± 12 µm. Porosity ratios above 65% are achieved in every sample group. According to the cell culture experiments, structures support high cell adhesion, viability, and migration through the porous network via interconnectivity. This study offers a practical and economical approach for the preparation of porous gelatin scaffolds with homogenous porosity which can be utilized in diverse tissue engineering applications

Nanofiber-enhanced lightweight composite textiles for acoustic applications

    Get PDF
This paper proposes lightweight textile acoustic structure, wherein electrospun polyacrylonitrile-based nanofibers enhance sound absorption properties with no weight and thickness penalty. Polyacrylonitrile nanofibers with diameter of 110 ± 7 nm were electrospun on spacer-knitted fabrics by varying deposition amount and surface coating arrangement. Proposed novel approach eliminated additional processing steps such as handling and post-lamination and provided easy scalability of nanofibers at macro-scale. The results showed that the sound absorption of nano-enhanced specimens was improved drastically when deposited amount of nanofibers or its effective surface area increased. Sound propagation paths in different configurations were interpreted from sound absorption and air permeability measurements. The sound absorption coefficient values up to 0.7 are achieved in the low and medium frequency ranges with no weight and thickness penalty by tuning deposition amount and surface coating arrangement

A prenatally detected adrenal cyst treated by adrenal-sparing surgery: case report and review of the literature

    Get PDF
A neonatal case of left adrenal cyst detected in utero and successfully treated by adrenal-sparing surgery is presented and discussed with review of the literature. Incidentally discovered prenatal adrenal masses present a diagnostic dilemma. Benign and malignant conditions can present as a fetal suprarenal mass. There is a wide spectrum of management modalities ranging from followup by serial sonographic scanning during pregnancy to early primary excision of the mass. We report a neonate with prenatal diagnosis of a cystic mass arising from the left adrenal gland. Postnatal excision of the mass without adrenalectomy was carried out. Frozen sections of the mass and a biopsy of the left adrenal gland confirmed the benign nature of the cyst and normal adrenal tissue. The uniloculated cyst was reported as a pseudocyst. After surgery, the recovery was uneventful, and the patient was discharged 4 days postoperatively in good condition. On the basis of this case and review of the literature, we may conclude that early primary surgical excision is recommended for either diagnosis or treatment if the results of prenatal or postnatal imaging studies are unreliable for the precise diagnosis of suprarenal mass. Adrenal-sparing surgery is recommended if pathological evaluation of frozen sections has confirmed the benign nature of the mass. Keywords: adrenal-sparing surgery, neonates, prenatal diagnosis, suprarenal cys

A highly sensitive and specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of antibodies to hepatitis C virus

    Get PDF
In this study, a 178 amino acids long portion of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) core gene was cloned, sequenced, expressed in Escherichia coli, and purified. The resulting antigen (C178) was tested with human sera enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in order to assess its ability to diagnose HCV. It was shown by ELISA that 92% of the patients sera, diagnosed previously by a 3(rd) generation enzyme immunoassay (EIA) as HCV-positive, had antibodies against the C178 antigen. This antigen gave no false positive results when tested with anti-HCV-negative sera

Dose- and time-dependent expression patterns of zebrafish orthologs of selected E2F target genes in response to serum starvation/replenishment

Targets of E2F transcription factors effectively regulate the cell cycle from worms to humans. Furthermore, the dysregulation of E2F transcription modules plays a highly conserved role in cancers of human and zebrafish. Studying E2F target expression under a given cellular state, such as quiescence, might lead to a better understanding of the conserved patterns of expression in different taxa. In the present study, we used literature searches and phylogeny to identify several targets of E2F transcription factors that are known to be serum-responsive; namely, PCNA, MYBL2, MCM7, TYMS, and CTGF. The transcriptional serum response of zebrafish orthologs of these genes were quantified under different doses (i.e., 0, 0.1, 1, 3, and 10% FBS) and time points (i.e., 6, 24 and 48 hours, h) using quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR) in the zebrafish fibroblast cells (ZF4). Our results indicated that mRNA expression of zebrafish pcna, mybl2, mcm7 and tyms drastically decreased while that of ctgf increased with decreasing serum levels as observed in mammals. These genes responded to serum starvation at 24 and 48 h and to the mitogenic stimuli as early as 6 h except for ctgf whose expression was significantly altered at 24 h. The zebrafish Mcm7 protein levels also were modulated by serum starvation/ replenishment. The present study provides a foundation for the comparative analysis of quantitative expression patterns for genes involved in regulation of cell cycle using a zebrafish serum response model. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2010

Cataloged from PDF version of article. In this paper, we study structural and morphological properties of metal-organic chemical vapour deposition-grown InGaN/GaN light emitting diode (LED) structures with different indium (In) content by means of high-resolution X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), photoluminescence (PL) and current-voltage characteristic (I-V). We have found out that the tilt and twist angles, lateral and vertical coherence lengths of mosaic blocks, grain size, screw and edge dislocation densities of GaN and InGaN layers, and surface roughness monotonically vary with In content. Mosaic defects obtained due to temperature using reciprocal lattice space map has revealed optimized growth temperature for active InGaN layer of MQW LED. It has been observed in this growth temperature that according to AFM result, LED structure has high crystal dimension, and is rough whereas according to PL and FTIR results, bandgap energy shifted to blue, and energy peak half-width decreased at high values. According to I-V measurements, it was observed that LED reacted against light at optimized temperature. In conclusion, we have seen that InGaN MQW structure's structural, optical and electrical results supported one another
